Best secondary small knife

Derek S.

This knife is not only small and can fit in your secondary small pocket perfectly, it also is great for fidget factor. Has great action and easily flips open out of the box and a very satisfying locking sound.

The factory blade edge is also amazing, can't believe I waited so long to pull the trigger on this little gem.

Very small

Andrew C.

This is a nice knife, my first cleaver blade. It however is smaller than expected. It is good for the pocket and EDC carry, but mine closes kind of funky. I suspect a thorough cleaning would fix this issue (I have similar issues with my Begleiter), but honestly I can't be bothered. Steel and design are good for this price regardless.

A surprisingly great knife

A kizer mini sheepdog for less than $100...count me in. Man i have to say i was surprised on the quality and overall feel of this beauty. When closed its very small, but once opened you can get a pretty good grip on it( i have large size hands). If you want a mini sheepdog but cant spend the extra $$ on the titanium models, get yourself this bad boy, you wont regret it. Also, it read more is so fairly priced that you can customize it in any way ;)

This is a fun little knife. The materials are great for the money and the action is pretty good. Now I need the XL

It's OK but with Quirks

This is more of a $40 to $45 value knife.
1. When showing others the knife it always gets a favorable first impression comment.
2. Arrived needing to be sharpened.
3. The action was very stiff compared to other new flippers I received.
4. The handle is peculiarly short even for my small hands.
5. The pocket clip was very tight and causes a hot spot when opening the read more blade mainly because the handle is peculiarly short.
6. You'll have to get use how far you have to move the blade to disengage the liner lock.

Great Little EDC

I've been carrying this knife for about a week now and it has been a great EDC knife. It comes very sharp and the action is very smooth for the price. Closing the knife isn't hard, but it's more difficult than it needs to be since the tab sits so low. I would highly recommend this knife.

Cool design BUT...?

I have been wanting this knife for a while, and am a butcher by trade. So the cleaver style is appealing. I have the vanguard sovereign and really like it. But with this knife the action is rather sluggish and the detent makes an awful squeak when flipped. Just doesn't seem to be up to par for the reputation that Kizer has built.

Very Cool Mini

There is a lot that could and should be said, and from any particular point of view.
Looks nice, cool, well designed, quality, etc.
Was a little above my price point, but bought it for being on sale. Handle has a pretty decent shape and feel... Probably could have beveled a little for liner lock access, and might also benefit in having assisted opening.
The Mini is a nice read more "personal" and not carrying a huge knife deal, but kinda wondering how I would have done with the full or regular sized one?
So although I like it, I think I have others that I like more for some combination of function &/or price.

This is my first cleaver style blade, and I absolutely love it. Feels great in hand, fits perfectly in my pocket. Blade came sharp, and slices beautifully. I'm finding it hard to remove from my pocket and give others their due. You'll love this knife.

Sharp

Cool looking knife. Blade shape is fun and edge is razor sharp. I imagined this knife larger in my mind. This would really benefit from a lanyard hole. I can only get a three finger purchase but it still feels pretty secure. Sticks a bit when flicking it open- needs just a bit of wrist action to flip it out and lock up. Go for the full size version if you're on the fence.

Kizer Sheepdog

I was a little skeptical at 1st, but as soon as I got it in my hand I fell in love with it. I especially love the groove at the tip of the bladw. It lets me really index with the blade for skinning. Additionally, the wide belly on the knife makes it pretty easy to keep super sharp.

Little and Big Sheepdogs

A few months ago I bought the Kizer Sheepdog and couldn't stop holding and flipping it and using it around the house. But it was a little bit too big for my every day carry, so I bought the Sheepdog mini for my EDC and I love it.

Ok for the price

Great Worker

This was my first time stepping up from a $30 knife, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a little small for my taste but still feels solid in hand. The blade is easy to choke up on and the action is smooth. Also my first cleaver/sheepsfoot blade, and I'm definitely getting more in this style because of it. Great size for EDC, I barely notice it in pocket. Definitely getting a full size read more sheepdog one day because of how good this one is!

Best in its Price Class

Out of the box, this knife was a bit gritty, and the whole knife was doused in oil. After cleaning it off, and 30 or so flicks, it got pretty damn smooth. This has kicked my 555-1 out of my pocket. I haven’t stopped fidgeting with this little gem. The edge holding is pretty average. It’s not crazy like 20CV but it is better than D2. The edge chipped a little when I was cutting read more some masking tape off some metal I was painting, but it was sharpened out with no problem. The ergonomics are spectacular for a small knife. I wear large size gloves, and this knife is a joy to hold. Maybe one small hot spot on the tail end of the knife at the base of the pocket clip, but other than that, amazing. It has the tiniest, and I mean tiniest bit of blade play. Completely negligible at this price. This is the kind of knife which, if you slapped a butterfly on the blade, would cost $160. Seriously.
Scores out of ten.

Great EDC Mini-Cleaver

Peter C.

I bought this as one of my first EDC knives, and it is fantastic to use. Despite being a small blade for EDC, the thickness of the blade, in general, helps emphasize that this knife is meant for work. Smooth action from the flipper and very solid lock-up. Fits nicely in the pocket and thanks to that nice finger-choil from the front, dudes with larger hands can get a secure grip read more with only 3 fingers. Very nice-tough looking blade. I'm definitely looking to get it's Big Brother, the Sheepdog XL, when it releases later.

I love this little beefy dude. I have an EDC rotation that is pretty substantial by most people’s standards and I stil always have this as a secondary.

Issues with detent have resolved over time and use. Best thumb flicker I own. It’s $70 you will not regret.

Smooth as Butter

Until now, my knife collection consisted of knives no more than $50 a piece. With this in consideration, a $20 jump made one hell of a difference. The blue accent makes this a beautiful piece. It came with a microfiber cloth for polishing. The weight is heavy in the way that it wants to be used & it opens smoother than any blade I've handled before.

Good job Kizer

Everything is great on this knife. Fun little flipper. The lock release doesn't really protrude from the handle much. Really need to get your finger in there to release the lock. Doesn't bother me though.

A great cleaver.

I ordered this knife more as a test to see if I would want to drop the money on the full sized C01C. That being said, the moment I pulled this knife out of the package, I loved it. The Action is so smooth and the click when it locks open is so satisfying. I knew this was the Mini version when I got it but I really suprised at the size. I really needed an extra quarter to half inch read more in handle length. I can only get 3 fingers on it. That would be my only detraction on this knife. But overall I love this knife. I'll definitely be picking up the bigger version.

A must have

Michael M.

First of all "Mael M." It is 154CM steel, they upgraded it. They're just using old pictures. Don't review something you don't own. Anyways this knife is just amazing. The action is perfect, fits great in the watch pocket of my jeans, price is amazing, ergonomics are good, easy to maintain, blade is great, thin behind the edge, super sharp out of the box. The only two things I would read more like to see on it are anodized back spacers to match the pivot collar, and gimping on the liner lock. This is a perfect secondary knife or even a primary if you're into small knives. Just get one you'll be glad you did, especially now that it is in 154CM steel.

Nice! (I dont own it)

Its great but the blade steel is VG-10 and not 154CM.

Cool knife

I have been looking for a reasonably priced cleaver-style folder a that was also small and this seems to fit the bill. It looks good, feels good and operates well. The blade flips out nicely, and locks securely. The clip is tight, and with the aggressive grip, it doesn’t slide into my pocket easily. But that should make it secure as well. Swings and roundabouts.
Came shaving read more sharp and fits nicely into my jean’s watch pocket, so I’m happy.

Excellent value

I knew I was getting a small knife, and that’s what I wanted. It’s such a great size for EDC. I typically run larger knives (PM2, 940-2) I felt like more often than not they were just a little bigger than I needed. This fits so well in my pocket, as well as my large to X large hands. Certainly you’ve seen everybody’s reviews so you know the stats. All I’d like to add is read more that the perceived value exceeds what you are paying. Looking forward to ordering the mini with titanium handles. I should also mention that mine came with 154cm steel. Every review I saw, and description I read said VG10. Not complaining, just thought I’d mention it.

Awesome budget folder

If you haven’t tried a Kizer you have to get one. Super smooth action, excellent detent, perfect centering, bearings, sheepsfoot cleaver...’nuff said! Seriously though only minor complaint here would be the pocket clip. It’s crazy tight both putting in the pocket and removing...but that’s a minor issue for an excellent knife. Comes with a really nice blade cloth also.

Great little knife

I'm restricted to only carry a knife under 3". The mini sheepdog is a great option. I love it. It is a very easy to carry knife that fits in your pocket perfectly. I highly recommend this knife.

First Impressions (updated)

Ryan U.

Well, I've had it for about an hour. The detent on mine is too strong, hopefully this breaks in after a while. Any stiffer, I probably wouldn't be able to close it with one hand. It's a cool looking knife for sure. I wish the handle was like a quarter inch longer. It's definitely an office carry knife. If I handed it to a worker in the field they'd probably laugh. If this breaks read more in how I want it too, I'll give it another star. Also the pocket clip is waaay to tight, it's worthless. Will probably remove it.

This knife broke in beautifully!
Always have it on me around the office.

Thanks for reading.

Neat, but.....

My Mini Sheepdog arrived today and like all of us, I was delighted to see the "Delivered" message when checking tracking. I will say that this is a neat little knife, my first "cleaver". My only sort of complaint, I guess, is that it is actually a little bigger than I was thinking/hoping for. Yes, you read that right, bigger. Other reviews consider this quite small, even comically read more so, but I was hoping for a little knife to just toss in my pocket sans clip and I'm not sure this is it. I have a great collection and plenty to chose from, but this was clearly different so I gave it a try.
That being said, this is my first Kizer and the fit, finish, build quality and action are all outstanding! This is a wonderful "little" knife, just not sure it is little enough for what I was looking for. I would call this an outstanding bargain as a "Mini Medford" at at least 1/10 the price! Give it a try, but just know it may not be as little or "pocketable" as you may think. A keeper? Very likely.

Just received the knife it’s awesome. Flips like butter very sharp out of box fit and fit and finish is spot on . I have medium size hands feels great but not for larger hands . I have many Kizer Knives they are in my opinion the best bang for the buck.

Awesome little blade I ordered another for a backup. Detent is very good. Came very sharp out of box. Looking forward to the Damascus one now.

Surprised and impressed.

I've owned Benchmades, Spydercos, Bokers, Kershaws, etc.
I've owned knives worth up to $700.

This one I took a shot in the dark on when preordering. For $70, the specs were unbeatable. I hadn't owned a Kizer before, so I had no idea what to expect in terms of performance.

So let me start with the specs. G10 handles, with steel liners, and vg10 supersteel, all riding read more on ball bearings. That alone is worth the money.

The action is perfect. Smooth as butter. Rides like a $200+ knife. Detent is very responsive on my knife, and very much so does its job. Any stronger, it would be annoying, any weaker, you'd have misfires. Right in the sweet spot.
It also has a distinctive click.
It's also ergonomic in the hand, the g10 has a great texture. A lot like Spyderco's texture on a pm2. Very comfortable, no hotspots.

Now for the tolerances.
Also perfect. I'm a freak when it comes to tolerances and performance. The blade centering was legitimately perfect right out of box, and this knife has NO play, at all. My lockbar makes contact about 90-95%, (looks like 100% at a glance), which is fine with me. I prefer my liner locks to have that much contact, I'm not sure how everyone else feels. It has a tiny bit of room to travel, but still makes extremely safe surface contact. Best of both worlds.
The cutting edge is hair popping sharp, shaves clean. Nice bevel.

The fit and finish is an A. I don't know what factory this knife was made in, but Kizer needs to continue using them. I don't care what country it's in, these results are incredible. The only "flaw" in finish is a small polish streak on the pivot screw, just a tiny crescent moon shaped polish mark, which could easily be fixed by some extra fine sandpaper.
The pocket clip screws do sit a little out of the liner, but the blade has a load of space. Nothing I haven't seen before in even more expensive knives.

I love the design. This knife is unique, comfortable, and very functional. This blade shape kills. It's very sleek and robust, and usually I'm not into sheepsfoot styles of blades.

This quality, this performance, it's unseen by me in any other knife below or at this price. Maybe I just got lucky on getting one that is flawless, so count this review as just my experience with this knife.

Applauses for Kizer.
If this is the usual to expect from this company, I'm very impressed.

Buy this knife. Buy two.

This thing is hilarious!

I read the dimensions of the knife before ordering but was still surprised by how small it is. It’s smaller than a Spyderco Delica. Awesome fit and finish, flips great. It came sharp enough to cut paper but I already sharpened it. At a 40 degree inclusive angle, it’s razor sharp now. There’s just something funny about a cleaver style blade on a knife the size of a Spyderco read more Dragonfly.

It's "Funsized"

Scott M.

Great little version of the C01. Action and lock up is excellent on both of mine, but one is significantly sharper than the other out of the box. Both will cut fine though. Also, one of mine has comically long clip screws that extend through the liner, with about a mm clearance to the blade when closed. I think someone just grabbed the wrong screws. Otherwise, for the money these read more are really cool. Understand though that these are three finger handles at most. I'm not a fan of the way VG10 is finished on Spydercos, but on these it looks great.

Detent is weak?

Jason W.

This knife is really well made for $70 and the size is great for EDC. But the unit I received has a weak detent. The blade only flips out reliably when I flick my wrist. Without the wrist flick, the lock engages only about 20 percent of the time.

Kizer Sheepdog C01C Mini

With regards to this review, I've had a prototype for around 4 months. In this time, I carried this knife as well as the XL-C01C prototype. Both of them are going to be incredible for whatever tasks you may put them through. Considering the mini is the first, I should say that this is going to be the hot seller of the two. Phenomenal action, liner lock, cutting power and comfortable read more in the hands. With the VG-10 blade, it will handle most things you'll encounter on a daily basis. I believe Kizer Cutlery has another great item available for their product offering, and I can personally suggest this knife to anyone. I personally will be placing an order for between 5-10 just so I can give them out as gifts; these knives are well worth every dollar.
