Read the instructions for your model.
Care advice depends on the blade, handle and mechanism. Opinel’s US guidance for wooden-handled folders cautions against soaking the handle and calls for drying the blade before closing. Its FAQ says wooden knives are not designed for the dishwasher. Follow the exact model’s instructions rather than applying one product’s routine to every knife.
Plan the routine before buying.
Ask where you will clean and dry the tool, what supplies the maker recommends, and how you will store it. If a maintenance routine is unrealistic on your trip or in your home, include that in the purchase decision. A material that photographs well is not automatically a material you want to maintain.
Keep a simple care record.
Save the manufacturer’s care page with your model number. Note any inspection or service instructions and the correct support route. If the mechanism behaves differently or the blade is damaged, stop using it and consult the maker’s instructions or support. A generic guide cannot diagnose an individual tool.
Separate care from modifications.
Routine cleaning and an alteration to the edge or mechanism are different decisions. Before changing anything, check the maker’s documentation and the tools required. We have not tested a modification procedure for the products in this catalogue. Our recommendation is to resolve the correct procedure first.
